There’s no two ways about it: if you grew up a hockey fan, you grew up dreaming of scoring an overtime winner to win the Stanley Cup.
Every goal in road hockey game, every time you scored a on an outdoor rink where there wasn’t even a goalie in net, and every bardown rip during a game of mini sticks in your basement was always more than just those things; they were always overtime goals to win the Cup.
These feats are the pinnacle of hockey glory, and ten years ago today – on June 9th, 2010 - we saw it happen.
Well, kind of. We didn’t really all realize it happened when it did, but we’ve definitely seen the replay of Patrick Kane sneaking the puck under the unsuspecting pad of Michael Leighton, and the confusion and elation that followed.
Patrick Kane had won the Stanley Cup for the Chicago Blackhawks, and it took literally everyone except him at least 5 seconds to notice.
The goal ended a 49 year Cup drought for the Hawks.
Kane took to Twitter to share his memories from the moment today.
Even if you don’t exactly remember seeing this goal live, it’s a tough one to forget.
