Zach Werenski was the third defenceman selected in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, but it looks like he should have been the first defenceman taken in the draft after his rookie campaign.
Last season, the Grosse Pointe, Michigan native put on a show for the hockey community as he put up 11 goals and 47 points in 78 games and was named one of the three finalists for the Calder Trophy.
On Tuesday, Werenski attended the Cincinnati Reds’ game against the New York Mets at the Great American Ball Park and the 20-year-old got to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
He's clearly more accurate from the blue line than he is from the pitcher’s mound, but at least he still managed to throw the first pitch over home plate, even if it was a little high.
The former first round draft pick made sure to bring a Blue Jackets jersey with him as he also took part in a jersey swap with Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez.
It seems like Werenski’s attendance sparked something in the Reds as they broke out for five runs in the first inning and went on to crush the Mets 14-4.
