The Moncton Wildcats are having a season to forget. Through 49 games of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season, the Wildcats find themselves sitting in the league’s basement. They’ve allowed a league-high 245 goals and have scored a league-low 130 goals, while totaling just 29 points through 49 games.
The team has not won a game since December 10, 2016, posting a 0-13-2-1 record over that span. Despite being blown out on what seems like a nightly basis, there are some bright spots on the roster, including 17-year-old Mika Cyr.
Cyr has played in just 23 games for the Wildcats this season, but he has 6 goals and 9 assists for 15 points, which isn’t bad considering his team is the lowest scoring team in the entire league. In a game against the Charlottetown Islanders on Thursday night, Cyr made it look like he was on the better of the two teams, as he split the Islanders defence to score a beautiful goal.
As nice as the goal was it didn’t make a difference, as the Islanders held on to defeat the Wildcats 8-5. The two teams went head-to-head again on Friday night, but that one wasn’t even close. Cyr scored another two goals, but they ended up being the only two in a 13-2 loss.
Cyr doesn’t turn 18-years-old until July 14, so we’ll have to wait until next summer to see if an NHL team thinks the youngster has what it takes to have a future in the league.
