The Chicago Cubs are headed back to the National League Championship Series after defeating the Washington Nationals in thrilling fashion on Thursday night.
It hasn't been easy for the Cubs, as they've faced a fair amount of challenges along the way, including having to take direct punches to the face from umpires. During the 8th inning, head umpire Jerry Layne took a Wade Davis fastball right to the chin after Cubs catcher Willson Contreras whiffed on a catch.
Layne was a little shaken up on the play, but he was able to continue after taking a short timeout to gather himself. Following the play, Contreras went up to Layne to check if the umpire was alright. Layne, who despite getting plunked in the face was in a rather jolly mood, jokingly retaliated with a little hit to Contreras' chin.
Yes, even umpires adhere to the baseball's unwritten rules. If your actions lead to someone getting plunked, you're probably going to get plunked as well.
