Some general managers simply enjoy shaking things up.
While many GMs are content with building through the draft and developing their players, other prefer to roll the dice and trade assets and players to acquire new ones. Take the Arizona Coyotes, for example, who have been on an absolute tare since general manager John Chayka took over duties in May of 2016. A chart posted on Reddit revealed that Chayka, along with Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin, have completed more transactions than any other GM with one team.

33 trades! And honestly, not too much to show for it yet. Arizona has failed to reach the postseason under Chayka’s tenure, though the team thrived down the stretch post All-Star Game. Some of his more notable moves include acquiring Derek Stepan and Niklas Hjalmarsson, and ironically enough, swapping forward Max Domi to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk.
Bergevin has also been busy, making a series of trades that haven’t seemed to work out very well for the team. In addition to Galchenyuk, the 52-year-old sent P.K. Subban packing to Nashville in exchange for aging defenceman Shea Weber, who’s played in just 104 games over the last two seasons.
Vegas was busy in their inaugural season as well, but that should be expected from an expansion team (even if they did manage to read the Stanley Cup Final). For Chayka’s sake, hopefully the ‘Yotes find a way to crack the postseason, or his hard work could ultimately look like a flop.
