It was as recent as April that Tiger Woods was on top of the golf world, having won the Masters for the first time since 2005.

Unfortunately, things appear to be on a different track at this weekend’s British Open. Tiger was off to a poor start from the get-go, grimacing after his first tee shot of the day. He finished with a first-round 78, which leaves him near dead-last in the standings after the first day of action.

Tiger was blunt after the round, speaking to reporters about his physical condition. This might come as a bummer hoping for more late-career greatness from the Big Cat.

Injuries, particularly that bad back, have been a recurring issue in Tiger’s career, and once again it seems to be an obstacle. It’s too bad, because after such a remarkable comeback narrative, there is no shortage of backers in his corner, and hopefully Tiger can still manage to turn things around.

It seems to have been a pretty topsy-turvy first round in general, as tournament favourite Rory McIlroy finished with an even worse score than Tiger and Phil Mickelson isn’t far behind. We’ll see what unfolds, but things aren’t looking great for Tiger at the moment.
