Sports logos can often inspire others to recreate or repurpose the logo into a spinoff or in the form of a mashup, like when designer company Versace used the Canucks old skate logo and made their own spinoff for a shirt that was going for thousands of dollars.
Legally, these type of mashups can create headaches, as the Vegas Golden Knights are currently in a dispute over their logo and name with the United States Army.
The Seattle Seawolves are gearing up for their inaugural season in Major League Rugby.
Although Seattle and Vancouver are separated by 229 kilometers, you’d think the Seawolves were owned by the same ownership as the Canucks based off their new team logo. Using the same colour scheme as the Canucks while borrowing the Seattle Seahawks’ green, the Seawolves’ logo looks awfully similar to the one of the Vancouver hockey club, with the orca whale being used as a seawolf.
It's almost as if the Canucks and Seahawks logos had a baby and this was it. The two teams have shown a partnership in the past based off geographical proximity, but we didn’t think their mascots were that close.
The Seawolves logo is actually pretty cool, even though we can’t help but think of the Canucks whenever we look at it. For what it’s worth, orca whales are known as the “wolves of the sea.”
