We'd like to think that shootouts are all about skill, but the breakaway contest is about luck, too.
If you don't believe us, just ask the Red Wings who won again in a shootout on Saturday night against the Florida Panthers.
The shootout win was Detroit's 12 consecutive shootout win (which is a new NHL record) and the streak has spanned three seasons.
The streak is impressive considering how much the Red Wings' roster has changed over the past three seasons, but to win 12 straight times in the shootout, you need skill and undoubtdly some luck.
The stat that proves that is Detroit's record in the breakaway contest in the three seasons prior:
At this point, you probably don't want to face the Red Wings in a shootout, but once their streak ends, would anyone be surprised if they went on a shootout losing streak?
Enjoy the ride for now, though, Wings fans.
