The NHL is one of the slowest leagues to adapt to the era of advanced statistics, so there is still a lot of missing data from years that could help provide a greater understanding of the game.

Yesterday, they released previously unavailable data that shows the sv% of goalies from 1955-1983.

It was always difficult to try and compare the eras of goaltending because sv% is usually one of the more consistent stats for goalies – especially among mainstream statistics. The top of list is filled with names of goalies that people always considered to be some of the best, but now we know for sure…or do we.

While this information has become available, many are still skeptical of it.

Of course, there’s no doubt that some of these goalies were great – relative to their era – but these sv% is pretty high for these eras. Many have been skeptical of the NHL’s data gathering in the past, especially TSN’s Travis Yost. However, he wasn’t the only one.
