A Back Door Cover in sports is when a team ends up covering the spread in the final minutes of the game. On Monday night, the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off one of the craziest Back Door Covers in the final minute of their game against the Washington Redskins.

The Chiefs came into the game as seven-point favourites against Washington. With the game all tied up at 20, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker nailed a 43-yard field goal to give his team a three-point lead with four seconds remaining.

Fans in Kansas City had a feeling their team had just sealed their fourth victory of the season, but Washington got one final shot to put some points on the board. However, it all went south pretty quickly after a failed lateral pass ended up in the hands of the Chiefs’ defence which resulted in a last-second touchdown.

Not only did the Chiefs add on a few extra points to their total, but they managed to cover the spread. On top of covering the spread, the over/under for the game was 48.5 and the last-second score brought the total up to 49.

That’s why they say it’s never over until the final whistle.
