This season, the Pittsburgh Steelers will take the field without Dan Rooney as the team’s Chairman for the first time since the 2003 season.
This past April, Rooney passed away at the age of 84 and the team is doing something special this season to honour their late Chairman.
The Steelers will play the 2017 NFL season with a special shamrock patch on their jerseys as a tribute to Rooney, which they’re also using as their display pictures on their social media pages.
Steelers President Art Rooney II went into detail about the design in an interview with Teresa Varley of Steelers.com.
“We wanted to have something my dad would be proud of and really called out parts of his life that were important to him,” said Steelers’ President Art Rooney II. “The shamrock is something he would be happy about.
“I know he wouldn’t want us to make too much of a fuss. I think wearing a jersey patch, he would be proud of that. It’s a great way for all of us to remember what he meant to each one of us and what he meant to the organization.”
The team will be rocking the patch on the right side of their jerseys and will wear them throughout the regular season.
