Steelers and Ravens Game is Only Second Wednesday Football Game in the Last 70 Years

Usually, on the first Wednesday of December, we could plop ourselves on the couch and have upwards of 10 NBA games to select from like in 2019, or we could even get tickets to go to the Scotiabank Arena and join 18,000 of our closest friends to cheer on the Raptors or Leafs if they were in town, but this isn’t a normal year.

Ever since the inception of the NFL there has been a total of 39 games played on a Wednesday. However, in the last 70 years, there has only been one. This was the 2012 season opener between the defending champions New York Giants took on the Dallas Cowboys and was moved up a day to Wednesday, September 5th because it was conflicting with President Obama’s inauguration.

Defending champion New York Giants and Obama’s inauguration, those two things feel weird to say in a sentence, eh? For reference, this was the same year that Psy’s Gangam Style took over the internet, Bad Luck Brian was the pinnacle of internet memes, and the first Avengers film was the highest-grossing blockbuster on the big screens.

Today we’ll be watching bitter AFC North rivals clash as the undefeated Steelers take on the depleted Baltimore Ravens, at 3:40 PM no less because NBC already commited to air the "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" ceremony tonight.

The Ravens had a covid outbreak that has run through their lockerroom like Lamar Jackson did to the league in 2019, all because their strength and conditioning coach must’ve been listening to a little too much Future and went Mask Off throughout their training facility after he didn’t report any symptoms.

How exactly did this game end up being pushed to a Wednesday, you might ask? Well, it’s been a tumultuous five days that saw the game get pushed back three times.

Originally this was slated to headline the American Thanksgiving games on Thursday, November 26th, then Sunday, then Tuesday, and now Wednesday, all per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The league has cited safety concerns for each postponement due to the Ravens having at least one player test positive for nine consecutive days, the last being Monday. The green light has been given and we can all get excited about some early afternoon Wednesday football.

Ever since the Titans disrespected the Ravens logo, they’ve had to place 22 players on the COVID-19 list. Did Mike Vrabel and the boys put a hex on the birds or is this just a mere coincidence?
