Every year, we hear about the bizarro world sports memorabilia that is left over when one team wins a championship.
Apparel manufacturers create an option for both outcomes of any championship series or game, so there is often a whole batch of gear that is given out to people in need somewhere on the other side of the globe. The sides that we don’t hear as much about are the stories created by newspapers.
Obviously, they run on deadlines, so they are working throughout the game, trying to predict the outcome. So, obviously, when the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history happens, there is going to be some wasted work. Some of those newspapers tweeted out what their graphics may have looked like if Tom Brady and the Patriots didn’t end up winning.
It’s hard to imagine now, but clearly, based on the statistical probabilities, Atlanta winning was the most likely scenario for almost the entire game.
It’s not just newspapers though, it’s sports media too. Rodger Sherman from the Ringer said it well when he poured one out for all the reporters that had to hit the reset button on their stories very late into the game.
