Last summer, Kevin Durant decided to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Golden State Warriors. Just about every Thunder fan felt betrayed by Durant’s decision, and did all sorts of things to let the 2014 NBA MVP know he was no longer welcome in town.
One of the things that one fan in particular did was start an online petition to have the city of Durant, Oklahoma changed to Westbrook, Oklahoma.
Obviously the city was not named after Durant, but the Thunder fans did not want to be reminded of the person who left them for the team that just eliminated them in the NBA playoffs. Unfortunately, the change did not happen and Durant, Oklahoma remains.
However, just because some parts of Oklahoma reminds them of the past it doesn’t mean they’re stuck in it. One very talented Thunder fan showed his appreciation for Russell Westbrook by dedicating a mural to him in town.
One thing’s for sure, Westbrook has given Thunder fans hope all season long and is pretty much the man around town.
