The 2017 MLB season got underway on Sunday, but most teams didn’t make their final cuts until a day or two before their first game.

This past week, 27-year-old Brock Stassi found out he had made the Philadelphia Phillies’ Opening Day roster and his reaction to the news makes you remember that not every athlete is in it just for the money.

Stassi was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 44th round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft, but re-entered the draft the following year and was selected in the 33rd round by the Phillies. Since 2011, the Sacramento, California native has made his way up the ranks, playing at every level possible before making the cut this season.

Hard work truly does pay off and Stassi is a perfect example of that. He currently ranks as the second first baseman on the team’s depth chart, but he also played left field and even pitched during his time in the minor leagues.
