Alexander Ovechkin shoots a lot. In fact, since he entered the league in 2005-2006, he has led the league in shots in 10 of 11 seasons.
Not only does he shoot a lot but he shoots consistently. That’s why it was so rare to see that last night, in Washington’s 6-3 win over the Red Wings, Ovechkin was held without a shot. It was the first time since March 12, 2013 that he didn’t record a shot.
Of course, the Red Wings didn’t win, but they did end a 315-game streak of Ovechkin’s. In that time he has scored 203 goals and, now, he’s only three shots behind Brent Burns for the league lead in shots again this year.
The other longest streak he had in his career was 198.
All of that and it still wasn’t the weirdest thing to come from this game. That award will have to go to Evgeny Kuznetsov, who put a puck in his mouth before returning it to the referees.
