The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox have been in a heated series the past couple of days.
With all of the news surrounding Adam Jones being called racial slurs by fans, Chris Sale throwing behind Manny Machado and Machodo responding with a profanity-laced rant, there’s been a lot to take in. With all of that going on, it’s understandable that you may have missed one of the most bizarre ends to an inning we’ve ever seen.
The ball was hit high and shallow into the outfield, which led some players to believe that the umps would call the infield fly rule.
The infield fly rule is basically a measure taken to prevent this exact thing from happening, because there are times that defenders could just let the ball drop and turn a quick double play because the opposition thought they would have to tag up. However, with the pall being hit into the outfield, this wasn’t one of those times.
Instead, JJ Hardy clumsily missed the fly ball and ended up helping his team.
Triple plays are a devastating play when they’re against you, but this one must have felt even worse for Red Sox fans. Two men on, no outs, you think you just got a lucky blooper and BAM – the inning ends.
Still, they ended up winning and as we said before, it was Machado who was the upset one after the game.
