Longtime New Jersey Devil Patrik Elias hasn’t played in the NHL in nearly a year, but he officially announced his retirement a couple of weeks ago.
Following his announcement, the team announced that Elias’ No. 26 would be retired next season, but they didn't stop there.
On Saturday, the Devils hosted the New York Islanders for their final home game of the season, and they did something a little special for Elias ahead of the game.
The team decided to have their all-time leading scorer come out during the warm-ups and take one final lap around the ice.
Known as #PattysLastLap, fans came from far and wide to watch the two-time Stanley Cup champion take one last lap, including his wife and kids who surprised him moments after at centre ice.
Elias played 1,240 games with the New Jersey Devils from 1995-2016, scoring 408 goals and totaling 1,025 points, and currently holds 11 team records.
