Sports will never be perfect because fans will always find something to complain about, whether that be video review or bigger nets in hockey.
That fact alone is why leagues are constantly mulling over unique ways to improve their sport and gain more fans by doing so.
MLB is the latest league to reportedly be considering a radical rule change. As per Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, Major League Baseball plans on testing a rule that would place a runner on second base automatically at the start of extra innings.
The rule change would begin in the 10th inning and extra inning after that.
MLB plans on testing the rule change in the minor leagues this season and in the World Baseball Classic which is right around the corner.
Here's what Joe Torre had to say about the rule change, as per Yahoo:
“It’s not fun to watch when you go through your whole pitching staff and wind up bringing a utility infielder in to pitch,” Joe Torre told Yahoo. “As much as it’s nice to talk about being at an 18-inning game, it takes time.”
While it seems like a decent idea, especially in terms of ending extra inning games early, some people are not on board with it to say the least.
While it remains to be seen just how effective and game-changing this rule will really be, we imagine it will be tough to get the players, especially pitchers, on board with it.
