Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh pulled off a pretty cruel prank on April Fool’s Day when he tweeted out that the McGregor-Mayweather bout had been confirmed.
While his tweet ended up fooling a lot of people into thinking the fight was confirmed, it turns out the confirmation of the bout could be right around the corner.
On Wednesday, Kavanagh joined FOX Sports Australia and mentioned that the fight is close and that McGregor is only training for Mayweather.
“In my mind, it’s on. That’s the mentality we’re in. Like you said, there’s a lot of fingers in the pie on this one. There’s different promotions, different organizations, different commissions that are involved, but as far as I’m concerned, I really believe it’s going to happen this year, and that’s the mindset I have. Let the people in the suits worry about the paperwork. We’re training for it.”
The two did nothing but go back and forth on social media for the longest time, but that has settled down as of late, most likely because the fight announcement is on the way and they need to get in as much training as possible.
Aside from McGregor training solely for Mayweather, it turns out Mayweather is doing the same and brought in UFC lightweight Kevin Lee to train with him to give the boxer an idea of what to expect from McGregor.
