Floyd Mayweather Jr. hasn’t fought professionally since he defeated Andre Berto nearly two years ago on September 12, 2015, and he certainly doesn’t need to fight ever again. But when you get it a massive payday offered to you it’s hard to turn it down.
Mayweather currently owns a 49-0 professional record, with 26 of those victories coming by way of knockout, and he plans on getting that 50th victory before he calls it a career. However, if he wants to end his fighting career with 50 career victories, he’s going to need to get the job done against Conor McGregor on August 26.
In a recent one-on-one interview with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, Mayweather called his first retirement “a vacation” and said that his fight against McGregor will actually be the last one of his career.
“I didn’t have plans of coming back at all and they gave me a deal I couldn’t refuse,” said Mayweather during his interview with Smith, who then asked Mayweather if there would be another deal out there that he won’t be able to refuse if he wins.
“No, I’m through. Don’t go to Canelo and Triple-G. I gave Al Heyman my word. I shook his hand and gave him my word, this is my last one.”
Both fighters are expected to make at least $100 million USD off the superfight in August, and considering Mayweather already has a net worth of around $400 million USD he really has no reason to ever work another day in his life ever again.
