Marshawn Lynch is at it again.
After signing a two-year deal with his hometown Oakland Raiders, Lynch wasted no time in reconnecting with the community of his old stomping ground while simultaneously reminding us why he is one of the most entertaining players in the league. A man already famous for causing social media eruptions (such as originally announcing retirement through a cryptic Twitter photo), Lynch once again caused a stir.
On Saturday, Lynch tweeted out a photo of himself sitting on a bicycle customized to say 'Beastmode', a nod to his NFL nickname. In the photo, Lynch instructs his followers to meet on Sunday with no explanation of what was happening except the hashtag #OAKLANDRIDEOUT.
We aren’t actually sure what specifically a “rideout” is, but the photo influenced hundreds of people to break their bikes out and hang out with Lynch (who characteristically showed up 40 minutes late to his own event).
It sounds like the type of event that would be raising money or awareness towards a cause, but as far as we can tell it was held for absolutely no reason at all. In the end, Lynch and his followers biked from Oakland Tech High School all the way to Berkley and back, which is just less than six kilometers each way.
In videos from the event, Lynch can be easily spotted as the only biker crazy enough to be wearing a toque on the hot Sunday afternoon, as well as the only biker being towed by a van for part of the ride.
The “Oakland Rideout” certainly came with a level of mystique (a.k.a. confusion as to what the heck was happening), but it did seem to rally the city of Oakland around their new running back.
Whether or not Lynch is able to find success on the football field is yet to be determined, but it is safe to say that regardless of his on-field performance he should continue to be one of the most entertaining personalities in the league.
