Just under one year ago Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris was lying in a hospital bed after sustaining life threatening injuries in a crash. Monday, McMorris was standing on the podium with an Olympic medal hanging around his neck.

Shortly after claiming his second Olympic bronze medal in the snowboard slopestyle event, 24-year-old McMorris took a moment to reflect upon his life and express gratitude for not only getting the chance to compete, but to even be breathing.

It's undoubtedly been a difficult road for McMorris who has suffered a number of serious injuries throughout his career, but certainly none as serious as his crash in Whistler back in April of 2017 that left him with a fractured jaw, fractured left arm, a ruptured spleen, a pelvic fracture, rib fractures and a collapsed lung.

But just like a true Olympian, McMorris persevered and now has a second medal to his credit. What a difference a year can make.
