The KHL playoffs are officially underway and there’s already been a lot of drama just one game into the postseason. Through two days of action, there has already been a double-overtime game, a triple-overtime game, brawls, and a game that was won thanks to a buzzer beater goal.
On Wednesday, Ak Bars and Salavat Yulaev opened up their series at the TatNeft Arena in Kazan, and it couldn’t have been more even throughout the entire game. Former NHLer Jiri Sekac opened the scoring for Ak Bars in the first period, but Kirill Kaprizov evened the game just over two minutes later. With the teams locked at 1-1 for the next 40-plus minutes, a buzzer beater was needed in order to decide a winner.
After reviewing the play, it was ruled a good goal by Atte Ohtamaa as there was .02 left on the clock according to the officials. The goal gave Ak Bars the 2-1 victory and a 1-0 series lead. We see games won with a buzzer beater in basketball all the time, but it’s very rare to see this happen in a hockey game.
