Earlier we mentioned how No. 1 ranked HC CSKA Moscow and No. 4 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl are going head-to-head in the semifinals of the KHL playoffs, which is also known as the Gagarin Cup. Lokomotiv evened up the series at 1 game apiece with a 4-3 road victory in Game 2.
CSKA had plenty of opportunities to even up the game, including this brutal miss on a wide open net by 20-year-old Andrei Svetlakov.
Sure, that goal would have tied things up and changed the final outcome of the game. However, you can’t put all the blame on the youngster, as the opening goal of the game for Lokomotiv came courtesy of CSKA defenceman and former Buffalo Sabres prospect Denis Denisov.
If you take away the own goal and turn that wide open miss into a goal, then CSKA has a 2-0 lead heading back to Yaroslavl. Instead, they find themselves evened up at 1 in KHL semifinals action.
We have definitely seen own goals that are worse than this one.
This one just stings a little bit more since it happened during a playoff game.
