The New York Islanders hosted their annual Captain’s Getaway at the Sebonack Golf Club on Wednesday, and it turns out the former NHL players and John Tavares weren’t the only athletes who booked a tee time at the golf course located in Southampton, New York.
It turns out Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry was at the golf course getting in some extra practice ahead of his afternoon game with his father, Dell, and a few others, and he got to meet the current captain of the Islanders during his early workout.
According to Brian Compton of NHL.com, Tavares was a little starstruck after he got the chance to meet and interact with one of the best basketball players in the world.
"That was pretty cool," Tavares told NHL.com’s Brian Compton. "Obviously, he's having some fun playing golf out east before his training camp. It's pretty amazing. He's obviously a special athlete and a lot of fun to watch, especially what he's done the last number of years.
"He's definitely a great person as well. He was talking about his family a lot. Pretty cool. I'm a little starstruck for sure."
Tavares’ discussion with Curry was a brief one, but it was one he’ll never forget. As for the former first overall draft pick, he spent the rest of the day competing against Clark Gillies, Sebonack superintendent and Islanders practice goalie Garret Bodington, and actor/die hard Islanders fan Vincent Piazza.
