The SBS Tournament of Champion is set to get underway on Thursday morning in Hawaii. Jordan Spieth won the tournament last year, beating out Patrick Reed by 8 strokes. This year, Spieth showed up to the golf course and parked in his special designated parking spot which was labeled “Defending Champion: Jordan Spieth”. However, it didn’t take long for that to change.
Professional golfer Justin Thomas is the person responsible for the late switch, but of course he’s not going to admit that.
It turns out Spieth really hates the nickname ‘Golden Child’, as he told the Golf Channel back in 2015.
“It was either Colt Knost or Robert Garrigus … I’m not sure who started with the nickname. But it’s not nice what I say to them when they say it to me. I’ve been working on trying to keep it quiet. And this week isn’t going to help.”
The defending champion of the course might be the last person you want to prank heading into this year’s version of the tournament. However, even though Spieth isn’t a fan of the nickname, perhaps he’s looking at it the wrong way.
