Doug Gilmour will forever be loved and respected by the Maple Leafs faithful. For those who got to watch him play, they got to see him put everything he had into every shift and he always did whatever he could to help the city. With the younger generation unfortunately missing out on the days where "Killer" reaped havoc on the ice, they're going to remember him in a different light.

Gilmour and Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada have teamed up with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the MLSE Foundation in the fight against diabetes. During the month of March, Sun Life will donate $500 for every home goal that the Maple Leafs score to the MLSE Foundation.

It's not just about the funds, though. Gilmour, Sun Life, the Maple Leafs and the MLSE Foundation are providing children with type 1 diabetes who can't afford to pay for hockey with a one-week hockey camp later this summer.

But while most Toronto-based sports fans would love to get a chance to take the ice with Gilmour, he jokes about the younger generation unfortunate to watch him play.

But whether they truly know about him or not, he just wants to help spread the word and raise awareness for something that he is truly passionate about fighting and beating.

He has some help from a younger athlete, though. While Gilmour and Tie Domi were teammates for a few years in Toronto, it's Tie's son Max who is now his teammate in the fight against diabetes.

You can help in the fight just by watching and tweeting. Every time a fan tweets or retweets #SunLifeAgainstDiabates during a Leafs home game in March, Sun Life will donate $5 per tweet, with a maximum donation of $50,000.

Gilmour ended the interview with one of his favourite quotes he lives by; "A person shows what he is by what he does with what he has."

So now it's your turn, do what you can to help in the fight against diabetes.
