The Houston Texans lost more than just a game on Sunday Night Football. They lost their on-field leader and a hero in the city of Houston.
The Texans announced that the 28-year-old Watt was taken to hospital following the first drive of the game and is out for the foreseeable future. Watt suffered a tibial plateau fracture to his left leg. Some reports are saying Watt is done for the season.
It’s a crushing blow for the Texans, who lost Watt for the second straight season prior to Houston’s bye week. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year missed the final 13 games of the 2016 regular season because of a back injury.
The support from the NFL community came pouring out on Twitter:
Watt will certainly have the support from the city of Houston behind him on his road to recovery. He started a relief fund for the victims of hurricane Harvey and raised over $37 million. Watt not only has solidified himself as one of the best pass-rushers in NFL history, but one of the best people in football, period.
It was a tough day for the Texans, as they also lost defenders Whitney Mercilus and Corey Moore on top of Watt. The Watt injury comes on the same Sunday that the New York Giants lost star receiver Odell Beckham for the season, and saw receivers Sterling Shephard and Brandon Marshall also leave their game against the Chargers.
