Joe Maddon and the Chicago Cubs hosted their third annual Respect Bald event on Saturday and it was a huge hit. Maddon and members of the Cubs came together at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona, ahead of their Spring Training game against the Los Angeles Dodgers to shave their heads to raise some money for pediatric cancer research.
Cubs fans were also able to participate in the event and have their head shave next to a Cubs player by donating $100 to the cause and were able to watch it all happen for free.
For a third straight year the campaign was a major success, as the team reportedly raised nearly $70,000 towards pediatric cancer research.
Cubs pitcher Jon Lester and first baseman Anthony Rizzo are both cancer survivors, so you can bet something like this is very close to their heart.
This is one of the best things any professional sports team has ever done. Hopefully more teams start to follow in the Cubs’ footsteps both on and off the field.
