On New Year’s Eve, the Carolina Hurricanes were put in a strange situation. While on the road in Tampa Bay, goalie Eddie Lack got sick before the game and was unable to dress. That’s when they turned to equipment manager Jorge Alves.

The Canes’ equipment manager ended up signing a professional tryout contract with the team and dressed as the team’s back-up goalie for their game against the Lightning. During the warm-ups, they even gave him the proper rookie treatment.

Now, nearly one month after making his NHL debut, Alves is getting his very own trading card, courtesy of Upper Deck.

Alves’ card will be a Young Guns promotional rookie card that will be available early next month at trading card shops throughout North Carolina.

Alves is not the first emergency back-up goalie to get his very own trading card. Chicago Blackhawks emergency goalie Eric Semborski also got his very own card, courtesy of Topps.
