After one of the greatest dunk contests in NBA history last season, it was going to be hard for this year’s event to live up to the hype.
After Aaron Gordon was knocked out in the first round and Derrick Jones Jr. didn’t complete his first dunk in the final, it had viewers disappointed. That’s going to happen on occasion with the event dependent on so much creativity, but it’s not like there wasn’t potential.
Earlier in the night, we got a hint that Jones Jr. might try and do some VC impersonation, but nothing ended up happening. Then, we had Gordon bring out a drone to set up his dunk, but after failing on several attempts it didn’t have quite the same impact.
None of that had any impact on the quality of jokes that the internet came up with though. It’s rare to get everyone watching one thing at the same time anymore, but when you do, there is sure to be a good internet reaction. Many people tweeted in disappointment of the event, but others also pointed out some hilariously bad moments of dunk contests past to put into perspective where this one ranks.
The takeaway? At least there were no layups.
