A new joint venture between the MLB and MLBPA called Players Weekend will let players express their personalities via their jerseys during the final weekend of August.
From Friday August 25th, to Sunday, August 27th, each team will sport a unique and vibrant uniform, with every player rocking a customized nickname on their nameplate.
Additionally, there will be patch on each player’s right arm that’ll represent a name of a role model or special individual that helped carve their path to the MLB.
The Blue Jays had some predictable nicknames, with Josh Donaldson’s 'Bringer of Rain' and Jose Bautista’s 'Joey Bats' headlining their release. Steve Pearce’s nickname on the other hand was what the young kids would call basic, and was released as, wait for it, 'Pearce', which he later clarified on Twitter.
Earlier in the day, we featured Kyle Seager’s jersey as the hands down favourite.
Kyle Seager – Seattle Mariners
There’s a ton out there that are noteworthy, but here’s a look at some of our favourites.
Josh Phegley – Oakland Athletics
Jarlin Garcia and Wei-Yin Chen – Miami Marlins
Carl Edwards Jr. – Chicago Cubs
Aaron Judge – New York Yankees
Chase Utley – Los Angeles Dodgers
Sean Doolittle – Washington Nationals
Andrew Triggs – Oakland Athletics
Kendall Graveman – Oakland Athletics
Ken Giles – Houston Astros
The collaborative initiative, which has a charitable component to it, will also feature custom coloured batting gloves, wristbands, hats, socks, bats, cleats, compression sleeves and catcher’s equipment, and batting practice apparel. It’s a cool and contemporary idea that goes with the “Make Baseball Fun Again” movement, and gets away from some of the old archaic stereotypes.
The more personality and fun in sports, the better, because that’s what sports should be all about.
Your move, NHL.
