Patrik Laine scored a goal on his own net last night and it probably seemed like the world was crashing down on him.

Tons of people are making jokes online about the moment, but it is easily the worst moment in the youngster's NHL career so far. Luckily he had his teammates there to help him shake it off, so hopefully he won't dwell on it too long.

If we can offer some way to help it's to show him that it's not that uncommon, and plenty of current NHL players have gone through the same feeling – sometimes in much bigger games.

Here are five current NHL players that scored own goals before continuing successful careers.

On March 9, 2008, in a time where they were considered they biggest rivals in the NHL, the Washington Captials faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was before the Penguins had won a cup, Ovechkin was in the middle of his 65-goal, 112-point season and Backstrom was a huge part of that.

With only 28 seconds remaining in the game, Backstrom put one into his own net, breaking the 2-2 tie and losing the game for his team. Since the 2007-2008 season, Backstrom has put up just over a point-per-game, with 598 points in 597 games.

Ryan Suter

Oh, you think that was bad, Laine? Ryan Suter once scored two own goals in the same game. While still in Nashville on March 24, 2011, Suter deflected one goal in with his arm and kicked in the other.

Of course, Suter is still one of the most relied upon defenseman in the NHL and what's more successful than signing a 13-year, $98 million contract.

No matter how crucial the timing was for Laine's goal, it was a regular season game. Nothing would feel worse than scoring an own goal in the playoffs. Steve Smith can tell you all about that. But others have scored on their own team in the playoffs including the recently retired Dan Boyle and current NHL player, Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

He scored on his own net in Game 2 of the Sharks' series against the Blues in the 2012 playoffs. Since then, he is an Olympic and World Cup gold medalist with Canada and has become one of the top shutdown defensemen in the league.

Erik Karlsson

Perhaps no one on this list has been as successful as Erik Karlsson after his own goal. In the battle of Ontario no less, Karlsson banked one off of his goalie's foot and in, giving Toronto a lead.

Since then, he has scored 269 points in 300 regular season games. Plus, he won the Norris trophy in that season and another in the 2014-15 season.

Marc-Andre Fleury

This one is iffy. It's hard to call this an own goal, but that's really what it is – at fault, intentional or not. It was 2008 and Sidney Crosby and the Penguins were in their first Stanley Cup together. They were against the Detroit Red Wings, in the third period and a puck was sitting behind Marc-Andre Fleury. He didn't know it was there, but it was there and he laid back into it, pushing the Stanley Cup winning goal into his own net.

Not to worry, the next season, the Penguins got another shot at the Cup against those same Red Wings and Fleury TOTALLY REDEEMED HIMSELF with a Stanley Cup clinching save.
